Negotiators Reach Tentative Agreement
Prince George’s County Educators’ Association (PGCEA) and the negotiators for the Prince George’s County Board of Education (Board) have reached a tentative agreement. The agreement extends the language of the contract for a year and provides a 5.5% raise. The raise is the highest percentage raise in the State and one of the highest in the region.
Negotiators for PGCEA and the Board worked hard to continue the progress made in the last two years of salary negotiations. Even in the face of a $52 million budget cut, the loss of 300 positions, and the expiration of the Governor’s salary challenge, the parties were able to reach the highest settlement in the State.
The new agreement sends a very strong message to the region and employees that Prince George’s County is committed to retaining current staff as well as recruiting the best and brightest. The appointed school board played an important role in recognizing the need to continue to press forward on the salary issue.
Around the State and region, settlements have not been that promising for teachers this year.

PGCEA will schedule a special Representative Council meeting after employees report for work, sometime in August 2002. At that time, Building Representatives will pick up voting materials on the contract. If approved by the Reps., materials will go to the buildings for a vote. If all goes well, the voting process for both PGCEA and the Board of Education could be completed by the end of September 2002.
Please make sure that you have a representative present at the August Representative Council meeting.
