Your Hard Work Paid Off
PGCEA wants to send out a thank-you to all of our members and education advocates who joined us over the past two weeks in getting out the message to members of the legislature that we wanted them to support the House version of the State budget. Our efforts were successful as you flooded them with hundreds of e-mails. The conference committee adopted, with amendments, a version of the budget in line with the recommendations of the House. Had they adopted the Senate version of the budget, the school district stood to lose an estimated $21 million in the FY 2010 budget and as much as $45 million in 2011. Because of your support, we were able to get a final version of the budget this weekend that will reduce funding by about $6 million, which is a far cry from the $21 million that was on the table.
Unfortunately, our work is not done. PGCEA will now shift its full attention back to the Maintenance of Effort (MOE) waiver request made by the County Executive to withhold $23.6 million in funding. Hearings on all statewide waiver requests will be held in Baltimore on April 27 before the State Board of Education. PGCEA, along with the Board of Education (BOE), submitted written arguments in opposition to the request from the county last week.
PGCEA is also preparing for the public hearings that the County must hold on the BOE budget. It is at that time citizens can appeal to the County Council members for support. In this case, that means reducing or eliminating the $23.6 million request to waive the MOE.
PGCEA also requests that you make sure you sign our on-line petition in opposition to the waiver request and get any family, friends and education advocates to join in, as well.
