The First Furlough Day
Article:
Monday August 16, is the first of four scheduled furlough days that will take place this year for 10 month employees. Under normal circumstances this would be the first day for returning 10 month employees to report to work for the new school year.
On days that are designated as a furlough day, employees cannot be required to report to work. PGCEA recommends that employees not come in on such days. The fundamental concept behind our position is that if you give away the service, why would anyone pay for it? We do however recognize that this is the opening of school and some members may feel compelled to come in and work on their rooms and attend to other details associated with the opening of schools.
If you do decide to report to work, please be advised of the following; - It is your decision if you come in and you cannot be required to participate in any meeting or activities.
- If you do decide to come in PGCEA recommends that you receive prior written approval or confirmation from your building principal or supervisor to do so. Our concern is that if anything happens we want to make sure our members are covered and their presence in the building is considered part of a job related activity
Advisory – Unit 1 members that were part of the group of employees that had their work year re-classified from either 12 or 11 months to a 10 month position are not considered as part of the normal furlough plan. As such the district had planned to require these employees to report on all scheduled furlough days. After negotiation with PGCEA on this matter, that plan has been revised and the following applies;
- Re-classified employees will be required to report to their duty station on August 16 as scheduled.
- Re-classified employees will not be required to report to their duty station on the remaining three furlough days and may work from home on such days.
