Education Job Funds Update 9/10/2010
As PGCEA reported at the August 30, 2010 Representative Council meeting, the Education Jobs Fund Program was passed by Congress in August and PGCEA immediately entered into discussions with the administration to stake out our fair share of the fund. Original projections indicated that Prince George’s County would receive about $25 million from the fund, but the state has now pulled back from that and advised all local boards of education that they do not have the projected amounts yet. That announcement has slowed down our discussions as we cannot determine what amount is available, and therefore, what priorities can be addressed.
What we do know is that, through PGCEA’s efforts, the Superintendent of Schools presented to the members of the board of education a presentation recently that supports what PGCEA has been pushing for since the legislation was passed. The priorities presented were:
- Class size reduction (targeted, not district-wide).
- Restoration of furlough days (number undetermined).
- Restoration of stipends/differentials.
While PGCEA is working with the administration on a plan, it is the members of the board of education that must make a final determination and vote on whatever the agreed upon recommendations are.
