School Board Adopts Budget And Contract
On Thursday, June 15, 2006, the Board of Education passed its FY 2007 operating budget and ratified tentative agreements reached with PGCEA and ACE/AFSCME Local 2250.
This was the first time in recent memory that the budget was completed in an early Budget Work Session and did not require adoption at the last meeting of this fiscal year. The amount is $116,582,900 or 8.5% more than the approved FY 2006 budget, coming in at a total of $1,493,401,600.
In an almost unprecedented event, the members of the Board of Education unanimously approved the tentative agreement between PGCEA and the Board of Education. Prior to this, PGCEA and its membership had always completed the ratification process first before the Board of Education concurred.
In a show of good faith, the Board of Education approved moving forward with the increment advancement, the 5% raise and other compensation improvements, where possible, beginning July 1, 2006. This will result in compensation improvements being implemented as the new year begins and prevents the need for any retro payments associated with salary to employees in the fall. This is a first in the relationship between PGCEA and the Board of Education.
If, for some reason, the agreement is not approved by PGCEA members, the Board of Education would have the right to collect any and all benefits granted under the tentative agreement.
