Snow Days
The Maryland State Department of Education has set in place a limited waiver process for school districts who were forced to close during the recent snow storms. State law requires students attend school for a minimum of 180 days and this waiver process allows districts to apply for up to a five day exemption. Students in Prince George's County missed nine days of instruction due to the severe weather in December and February.

Under the waiver provision, systems must demonstrate that they have made sufficient effort in providing instruction through calendar planning and modifications.

Unfortunately due to time constraints, MSA testing cannot be pushed back and will occur as scheduled. The state superintendent of schools will be requesting that the United States Department of Education allow for the use of 2009's testing targets when determining whether or not schools make AYP (adequate yearly progress) this year.
